Description
The three essays on Russian Icon, A World View in Painting, Two Worlds in Old-Russian Icon Painting, and Russia and Her Icons, by Prince Evgenii Nikolaevich Trubetskoi treat of matters which are of importance not only to the student of Russian culture and of Eastern Orthodox theology but also to students of history of art. These studies are a remarkable attempt to explain the Russian icon as reflection of a comprehensive religious experience and world view. Steeped in teachings of the Russian church, well versed through personal research in the history of the ancient and medieval world and creatively engaged with Western European philosophy, E. N. Trubetskoi had also mastered that stylistic approach to art which was just emerging at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
